Why has the water bill gone up so much?

The UK’s water companies are currently completing a massive upgrade to infrastructure, designed to modernise how water is stored and transported. Among the improvements is the construction of ten new reservoirs, as well as repairs that will reduce water wastage by 25% compared to 2020.

Overall, the upgrades are projected to cost £96bn over the next five years, with some of this funding coming from a water bill increase for customers.

How can I beat the water bill increase?

In the UK, you can’t choose your water supplier, so there’s no option to switch to avoid a water bill increase. However, there are some ways you can reduce the amount you pay for water.

One thing to consider is if you currently have a water meter fitted. Metered properties (about half of the homes in the UK) pay for the amount of water they use. Unmetered properties (the other half) pay an estimated total based on the size of their home and the area they live in.

If you use less water than average, you could save by switching to a water meter. Read more about metered versus unmetered water here.
