How to compare SIM only deals

How much data do you need?

Check how much data you use each month in your phoneโ€™s settings and choose a plan with an allowance close to that. Unlimited data is only good value if you regularly stream, hotspot or download a lot on the go. Unlimited UK calls and texts are standard on most SIM only plans, but international and premium rate calls usually cost extra.

Contract length and price rises

SIM only plans range from one-month rolling deals to 24-month contracts. Rolling plans let you change or leave at any time, while longer contracts are often cheaper each month. Since 17 January 2025, Ofcom rules mean any price rise written into a new contract must be set out in pounds and pence when you sign up, so check what youโ€™ll pay later in the contract, not just the starting price.

eSIM, EU roaming and credit checks

An eSIM is a digital SIM you activate without a physical card, if your phone supports it. Not every network includes EU roaming, and some charge a daily fee, so check this if you travel. Some plans donโ€™t need a credit check, which can help if youโ€™re new to the UK. You can filter by all three on this page.

Keeping your number and checking coverage

To keep your number, text PAC to 65075 and your current provider will send you a code, valid for 30 days. Give it to your new provider and your number should move over within one working day. Each SIM runs on one of the UKโ€™s mobile networks, so check signal at your home and work before you switch.

See Ofcomโ€™s guide to switching mobile provider or check coverage with Ofcomโ€™s Map Your Mobile.

SIM only deals FAQs

How much mobile data do I need?

Look at your monthly data use in your phone's settings and pick a plan with a similar allowance. Light users who mostly use Wi-Fi may only need a few gigabytes, while people who stream video or use their phone as a hotspot often need 30GB or more, or unlimited data.

What is a SIM only deal?

A SIM only deal gives you calls, texts and data without a new handset, so you keep your current phone. Because you're not paying off a phone, SIM only plans are usually much cheaper than handset contracts.

How do I keep my phone number when I switch?

Text PAC to 65075 for free and your current provider will reply with a PAC code, which is valid for 30 days. Give the code to your new provider and your number should be moved over within one working day.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of inserting a card, you activate your plan by scanning a QR code or using the network's app. Most recent phones support eSIM, but check your model before you choose one.

Is EU roaming included?

It depends on the network and plan. Some include roaming in the EU at no extra cost, while others charge a daily fee. Plans that include EU roaming can be filtered on this page.

Do I need a credit check for a SIM only plan?

Most pay monthly contracts include a credit check, but some providers offer plans without one. These can be useful if you're new to the UK or have a limited credit history, and you can filter for them on this page.
