Is your home in a CPZ? If you’re moving to a new area or have recently got a car, you need to make sure you have permission to park around your house.
In the UK, most councils operate CPZs or Controlled Parking Zones. Find out more about what this means for drivers, and how to apply for a parking pass.
What is a CPZ?
A CPZ or Controlled Parking Zone is an area where parking is only allowed for permit holders during certain hours of operation. This might be a few hours – for example, 8 to 10 am Monday to Friday – or for most of the day – for example, 8am to 10pm Monday to Sunday.
Local Councils will designate an area a CPZ to control traffic, and ensure local residents are able to park around their homes. Short-term CPZs are commonly found around schools or other areas that are very busy at certain times of day. Longer-term CPZs are often in place on high streets or busy shopping areas.
The exact rules for controlled parking vary between local authorities.
How can I tell if a street is a CPZ?
Controlled parking zones will be clearly signposted. Places to park will be marked with white bays (where parking is considered safe) or single yellow lines (showing parking is permitted only outside of the controlled hours).
There will also be a clearly visible sign mounted on a pole or lamppost showing the rules for parking. This will include the controlled hours and whether parking is prohibited or permit-only during those hours.
Can I park in a CPZ?
Anyone can park in a CPZ outside of the controlled hours (the times shown on the street’s sign). Within the controlled hours, parking may be limited to permit holders only or completely prohibited.
Tip: CPZ timings and restrictions vary, so be sure to check the displayed signage before parking to avoid a fine.
How to get a parking pass in the UK
If your home or workplace is in a CPZ, you can apply for a permit to park through your local council.
Not sure which council is responsible for your home? You can find the local authority for any postcode, and how to contact them, here.
To apply for a resident’s permit, you will need to provide proof of address, such as an addressed bill or bank statement, as well as proof of your vehicle ownership and registration.
How much does a CPZ permit cost?
The cost of your parking pass will depend on a number of factors, including which council is responsible for your area and what kind of vehicle you drive.
Some local authorities base the cost of your permit on vehicle emissions (measured in CO2 g/km driven).
How long does a CPZ permit last?
Controlled parking permits typically last for one year from the date of issue. When your permit expires, you can apply to renew it through your Council’s website using the same details you provided previously.
