How to save or manage bills efficiently

  • Lowering your thermostat by just one degree can significantly reduce your heating bill, with a potential saving of up to £80 a year.
  • Rather than using standby mode on your home appliances and electronic items, power them off completely and disconnect them from the mains.
  • While professional draught proofing can be expensive upfront, it could save you around £80 each year.
  • Bleed your radiators as air can become trapped inside them over time, causing them to work less efficiently.
  • Buy more energy-efficient appliances. An ‘A’ rated appliance will save you the most energy, while a ‘G’ rated one will consume the most energy.
  • To save on your water bill, have a free water meter installed, switch to a more efficient shower head, take fewer baths, and switch to showers instead to consume less water.
  • Gas and energy prices are governed by the Ofgem Energy Price Cap, which limits how much your supplier can charge you for every unit of energy consumed. You may be able to lower energy bills by switching to a different supplier or tariff.
  • Insulating your home can help to save energy as it will keep your house warmer during winter and cooler during summer, and a lot longer too, once you switch off the heater or air conditioning.
  • If you live alone, live with an under-18 only child or live under other special circumstances, you may be able to get a reduction of up to 50% on your Council Tax.
  • Some households are eligible for government grants and support, so it’s always a good idea to check with your local council.
  • When your mobile or broadband contract is about to expire, check out a few comparison sites, as you may be able to find a better deal.
